Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 22-year-old suspect, Olamide Suleiman, during a stop-and-search operation in Aguda, recovering firearms and substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying the suspect was intercepted along Adetola Road during a routine police operation.
According to the statement, a search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, while a further search of his bag uncovered a locally made pistol loaded with one live cartridge.
During interrogation, Suleiman allegedly told investigators that the pistol belonged to one Emir, who was staying in a hotel in the Aguda area.
Acting on the information, police operatives immediately raided the hotel and searched the room allegedly occupied by the suspect, where they recovered a double-barrel gun.
However, the principal suspect reportedly escaped before the arrival of the police.
The Command said investigations were ongoing, while efforts had been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspect and other members of the suspected criminal gang.
Commending the operatives for their vigilance, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, reaffirmed the Command’s determination to rid the state of criminal elements.
He urged residents to continue supporting the police with timely and credible information to aid crime prevention and the arrest of criminal suspects.
The Command also advised members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, vehicles and activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines.
