The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed reports alleging that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, ordered officers to shoot anyone found with illegal firearms, describing the claim as false and a distortion of his remarks.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the police said the Inspector-General never issued a “shoot-on-sight” directive during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Makurdi, Benue State.
According to the police spokesperson, the IGP’s comments were taken out of context and misrepresented in some media reports, leading to public misunderstanding.
The statement explained that Disu had merely reminded officers that only security personnel legally authorised by law are permitted to carry firearms, while drawing attention to the increasing proliferation of illegal weapons used by criminals involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, cult-related violence and other violent crimes.
The Force further clarified that the Inspector-General reaffirmed that the use of firearms by police personnel is strictly regulated by Force Order 237, which outlines the circumstances under which officers may lawfully use firearms in the course of their duties.
”The Inspector-General stressed that officers must always act within the law and comply with the approved rules governing the use of force. At no time did he direct officers to shoot anyone merely because such a person was found in possession of an illegal firearm,” the statement said.
The police reiterated their commitment to protecting the lives and rights of all Nigerians, noting that officers are expected to carry out their constitutional responsibilities professionally, responsibly and with full respect for human rights and the rule of law.
The Force also urged journalists and members of the public to verify information before publishing or circulating it, warning that inaccurate reports on security issues could generate unnecessary fear, mislead the public and erode confidence in security institutions.
