The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed as false and baseless allegations by social media personality Martin Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, that a man identified only as David died in police custody during the tenure of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Olohundare Jimoh Moshood as Commissioner of Police in Lagos State.
The Force said there was no official record of any such incident during AIG Jimoh’s tenure, describing the allegation as a deliberate fabrication aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the senior police officer and eroding public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the police, there is no incident report or record indicating that any person died in police custody in Lagos State during the period AIG Jimoh served as Commissioner of Police.
The Force challenged the social media influencer to substantiate his claims by providing verifiable details that would enable investigators to establish the facts.
The police specifically requested the full identity of the alleged victim, the exact date the incident purportedly occurred, the police detention facility where it allegedly happened, and any other relevant information that could assist in conducting a thorough, impartial and discreet investigation.
The Force maintained that providing such details would enable the appropriate authorities to objectively investigate the allegation and determine the true circumstances of the matter.
The police further stated that throughout AIG Jimoh’s tenure as Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, no complaint—either verbal or written—was received from any individual or family alleging that a relative died in any police detention facility in the state.
The Force urged the originator of the allegation to cooperate with investigators by making available any evidence in his possession instead of relying on social media claims.
It assured Nigerians that if credible evidence is presented, the Nigeria Police Force will investigate the matter transparently, in accordance with the law, and ensure that justice is served.
