Two suspected kidnappers and armed robbers have been killed in a gun duel with police operatives along Eziowelle Road in Anambra State, with the security team recovering an AK-47 rifle, a pump-action gun and ammunition from the scene.
The Anambra State Police Command said the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, August 19, 2026, after operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, acted on credible intelligence about the presence of suspected armed criminals along the road.
According to the Command, the suspects opened fire on the police team when they sighted the operatives, prompting a gun battle.
Two of the suspects sustained fatal gunshot injuries during the encounter, while other members of the gang reportedly fled the scene with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.
The police said one AK-47 rifle with a magazine containing four live rounds of ammunition, one pump-action gun and five live cartridges were recovered from the scene.
The development was disclosed in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on Wednesday.
The Command said the operation was part of its renewed intelligence-led efforts to dismantle criminal networks involved in kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes across the state.
It said further investigations had commenced, while efforts had been intensified to track down the fleeing members of the gang.
The Command, under the leadership of CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, reaffirmed its determination to sustain proactive and intelligence-driven operations aimed at protecting residents and improving security across Anambra State.
The police assured that further developments would be communicated as investigations continue.
