Police operatives in the Federal Capital Territory have rescued a man from an angry mob that was allegedly attempting to lynch him over claims that he tried to abduct a five-year-old child in Kuje Area Council.
The suspect, identified as Bashir Usman, was rescued by operatives of the Kuje Divisional Police Headquarters after a distress call was received at about 2:46pm on October 4, 2026, reporting that an unidentified adult male was being assaulted by a mob.
According to the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident occurred in Angwan Lado, Kuje, where Usman was allegedly confronted by the mob over an attempt to abduct the child in front of her residence.
She said police operatives immediately responded to the distress call and rescued the suspect from the mob, which was reportedly about to lynch him.
Adeh said the suspect had been taken into protective custody, while investigation had been expanded to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence and determine whether other persons were involved.
Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, condemned the resort to jungle justice, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands.
Sanusi said such actions were criminal and could amount to murder, stressing that alleged offenders should be handed over to the police for investigation and prosecution.
The commissioner also urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and pay close attention to the safety and wellbeing of their children and wards.
The command appealed to residents to promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency numbers, 08028940883 and 08032003913.
