Police Rescue Unconscious Man Suspected to Be Under the Influence of Hard Drugs in Awka

Anambra State Police Command has rescued an unidentified middle-aged man found unconscious by the roadside in Awka, in what authorities believe is another stark reminder of the growing dangers of substance abuse and the need for sustained public awareness campaigns against drug addiction.
The Command disclosed that the victim was rescued by Police Operatives attached to B Division during a routine midday patrol on July 15, 2026, along Oby Okoli Avenue, UNIZIK Temporary Site, Awka.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the man was discovered lying unconscious by the roadside with no visible signs of violence or physical assault.
The operatives immediately evacuated him to the Police Hospital in Awka, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
Police said a search conducted on the victim yielded no means of identification or mobile phone that could assist in tracing his identity or contacting his relatives.
Preliminary findings suggest the man may have been under the influence of hard drugs, although investigations are ongoing. The Command said efforts have been intensified to establish his identity and locate his family members for necessary follow-up actions.
The incident, according to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, underscores the dangers associated with substance abuse and drug addiction, particularly among young people.
He reiterated that the Anambra State Police Command remains committed to promoting public safety through its Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), which focuses on preventive policing, public enlightenment, advocacy, and collaboration with stakeholders to discourage drug abuse, cultism, and other social vices.
The Command added that further developments on the victim’s identity and condition would be communicated as investigations progress.
