Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled a late-night terrorist assault on a military position in Monguno, Borno State, but not without a painful loss, as a Commanding Officer and six other personnel were killed in the line of duty.
The incident, described by military authorities as an isolated infiltration attack, occurred on April 12, 2026, at a location identified as “Charlie 13” under Sector 3 of the Joint Task Force (North East).
According to a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, the troops came under heavy attack from suspected terrorists, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire. The soldiers, however, successfully overpowered the assailants, forcing them to retreat while maintaining full control of the location.
The Commanding Officer, in what has been described as an act of exceptional bravery, was moving toward the frontline to personally assess the situation and boost troop morale when his vehicle hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The explosion claimed his life alongside six other gallant personnel.
Military authorities said the fallen officer’s actions reflected the highest standards of leadership, noting that he chose to lead from the front even after the immediate threat had been subdued.
“His courage, selfless service, and unwavering commitment to his troops remain a testament to the finest traditions of the Armed Forces,” the statement noted.
Operation HADIN KAI expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the deceased as heroes who paid the supreme price in defence of the nation’s territorial integrity and the safety of its citizens.
The military also assured that efforts to rid the North-East of terrorism remain steadfast, with troops continuing offensive and defensive operations across the theatre.
The latest development underscores both the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups in the region and the sacrifices made daily by Nigerian soldiers in the ongoing counter-terrorism campaign.
While the nation mourns, the resolve of the Armed Forces remains unshaken, as they continue to confront security challenges with determination and resilience.
