Seventeen police officers undergoing specialised counter-terrorism training at the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Yobe State, have been killed following a deadly terrorist attack on the facility, the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of May 8, targeted the military institution located in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, where armed terrorists reportedly launched coordinated assaults from multiple directions at about 1:15 a.m.
The slain officers were among personnel participating in advanced tactical and operational training designed to strengthen national security operations. Several soldiers of the Nigerian Army were also reportedly killed while repelling the attackers.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the fallen officers as courageous and patriotic personnel who paid the supreme price in service to the nation.
The police chief expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officers, assuring them that the sacrifices of the slain personnel would never be forgotten by the Force and the country.
“As gallant officers committed to defending the nation, they demonstrated exceptional dedication by participating in specialised counter-terrorism and tactical training programmes aimed at improving national security operations,” the IGP stated.
In a show of solidarity, the Commissioner of Police in Yobe State, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, visited the training institution on behalf of the IGP to commiserate with the Commandant of the school, A.C. Enuagu, officers of the Nigerian Army, and surviving police trainees.
During the visit, the police commissioner praised the resilience and bravery of surviving officers and urged them to remain steadfast in completing the training programme in honour of their fallen colleagues.
The Nigeria Police Force further assured Nigerians that security agencies, in collaboration with the Armed Forces, were intensifying efforts to track down and bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice.
The Force also paid tribute to the fallen officers, describing their sacrifice and commitment to duty as a lasting symbol of courage and patriotism in the fight against terrorism.
