Tragedy in Abuja: NYSC Member Killed in Crossfire During Robbery Response in Dei-Dei

A tragic incident has struck the Federal Capital Territory following the death of a serving National Youth Service Corps member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, who lost his life during a security response to an armed robbery attack in Dei-Dei, Abuja.
In a statement signed by Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade, the Nigerian Army confirmed that the incident occurred in the early hours of April 25, 2026, at Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, when troops responding to a distress call came under gunfire from fleeing armed robbers.
According to the statement, troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group were on routine night patrol when they were alerted to an ongoing robbery attack in the area.
Upon arrival, the soldiers engaged the attackers in a brief but intense exchange of gunfire as they attempted to repel the criminals and restore order within the community.
It was during this chaotic and volatile situation that the corps member was caught in the crossfire, sustaining injuries that ultimately proved fatal despite efforts by security personnel to stabilise the situation and preserve lives.
The Guards Brigade described the incident as deeply painful, noting that the loss has cast a profound shadow over its personnel, who were engaged in a legitimate effort to protect residents from harm.
“Despite efforts by troops to secure the area and preserve lives, he sadly succumbed to his injuries,” the statement said.
Preliminary findings indicate that the situation was highly fluid, with troops prioritising the safety of residents while confronting armed criminals who posed an immediate threat to the community.
The Commander, Guards Brigade, alongside officers and soldiers, extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, the National Youth Service Corps, and all affected by the tragic loss.
“We share in their grief and stand in solidarity with them during this moment of profound sorrow,” the Brigade stated.
The military authorities also disclosed that a comprehensive investigation has been initiated to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident, assuring the public that the process would be transparent and its findings made available.
The remains of the deceased have since been handed over to civil authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property within the Federal Capital Territory, the Guards Brigade said it would continue to review its operational procedures to enhance civilian safety.
Residents were urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to ensure the safety of communities across Abuja.
