Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a suspect involved in diesel theft operations in Akwa Ibom State, following a crackdown on criminal elements siphoning petroleum products from heavy-duty equipment.
The operation, carried out by troops of 2 Brigade, was based on credible intelligence on illegal activities at Sterling Petroleum and Fertilizer Limited located in Ukpe Ete, Ikot Abasi Local Government Area.

Army authorities disclosed that the suspect was apprehended while transporting stolen diesel products.
However, the situation escalated when some youths in the community allegedly mobilised and barricaded the road in an attempt to free the suspect and seize the recovered items.
According to the Army, the youths attacked troops with bottles and stones while the soldiers were carrying out their lawful duties.
In a statement by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Captain Lawal Bala Muhammad, troops initially exercised restraint to prevent escalation.
“Troops fired warning shots to disperse the crowd, but the youths became more violent,” he said.
He added that the ringleader of the mob was identified and shot in the leg during the confrontation.
“The individual was immediately evacuated to the hospital for treatment,” the Army spokesman stated.

Despite the intervention, the mob reportedly turned more aggressive, vandalising private vehicles and attacking company trucks along the route.
Reinforcements were later deployed to restore order and secure the area.
During follow-up operations, security personnel discovered an unidentified corpse with a coffin placed beside it, raising fresh concerns over activities in the area.

The remains were evacuated to the mortuary by the Nigeria Police Force, supported by troops.
The Army said troops are currently maintaining a strong presence in the community to safeguard lives and protect company assets.
Authorities have appealed to residents to remain law-abiding and support security agencies with credible information.

“The Brigade remains committed to protecting lives and property,” the statement added.
