The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of ASP Newton Isokpehi, the police officer captured in a viral video allegedly threatening violence and engaging in unprofessional conduct.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police incharge of Finance and Administration, DCP Ngozi Ezeabata on behalf the Anambra State Commissioner of Police made available to Razornews.
According to the statement, the officer was immediately identified and arrested following a review of the video circulating on social media.
The Command stated that internal disciplinary proceedings have since commenced against the officer in line with the disciplinary standards and ethical code of the Nigeria Police Force.
It further disclosed that the officer had been subjected to a drug test as part of the ongoing investigation aimed at establishing all surrounding circumstances relating to the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the conduct displayed in the video and reiterated that the police would not condone misconduct, abuse of office, incitement or any behaviour capable of undermining public confidence.
The statement assured residents of Anambra State and the general public that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public.
It added that any officer found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with police regulations and the law.
The Command also reminded officers and men to remain professional, emotionally balanced and respectful while carrying out their lawful duties.
The police appreciated members of the public, civil society groups and social media users for supporting accountability efforts through the provision of credible information.
Residents were encouraged to continue reporting incidents or conduct capable of undermining public safety and confidence in security agencies.
