The Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO emerged champions of a thrilling novelty football match after defeating its host community team from Egweama 4-3 on penalties in a keenly contested encounter held as part of activities marking the 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Nigerian Navy.
The match, played on 30 May 2026, served as a platform to deepen civil-military relations and promote community engagement through sports. Both teams displayed determination, skill and sportsmanship throughout regulation time, with neither side able to find the breakthrough after 90 minutes of action.
Following a goalless draw, the contest was decided through a penalty shootout, where FOB FORMOSO held its nerve to secure a hard-fought 4-3 victory and claim the championship trophy.

Speaking after the match, the Commanding Officer, FOB FORMOSO, Capt SK Haruna, congratulated the victorious team for its resilience and determination. He also commended members of the host communities for their enthusiastic participation and support, noting that the highly competitive encounter reflected the cordial relationship between the Nigerian Navy and its host communities.
Capt Haruna explained that the novelty match was organised not only to commemorate the Nigerian Navy’s 70 years of dedicated service to the nation but also to strengthen civil-military cooperation through sports and social interaction.

The event’s highlight was the presentation of the championship trophy to the FOB FORMOSO team, while members of the host community side received cash gifts in recognition of their impressive performance and exemplary sportsmanship.
The football showdown formed part of activities commemorating the Nigerian Navy’s landmark anniversary and underscored its commitment to fostering unity, friendship and mutual understanding with host communities.
