ABUJA – The Nigerian Army has officially disowned several social media accounts falsely claiming to belong to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.
According to a statement released on Friday by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, these fraudulent accounts are being operated by scammers with the intent to mislead and defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
Colonel Anele clarified that Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu does not operate any official social media account on any platform. She warned that impersonators have been known to use these fake profiles to solicit funds or disseminate false information under the guise of the COAS.
“Any account claiming to represent the Chief of Army Staff on social media is entirely fake and should be disregarded,” Anele stated.
The Army urged the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid any form of engagement with these accounts. Furthermore, members of the public are advised against sharing or amplifying any content originating from these fraudulent platforms to prevent the spread of misinformation.
The statement also revealed that security measures have already been activated to track down and arrest the individuals behind these scams. Colonel Anele emphasized that those found guilty will be prosecuted to the full extent of existing laws.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to national security and the protection of the public from cyber-related crimes and impersonation.
