The Ogun State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough against organised crime following a series of intelligence-driven operations that led to the arrest of six suspects and the recovery of firearms, ammunition, suspected stolen generators and mobile phones across different parts of the state.
The coordinated operations, carried out by the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit and Ibafo Division, targeted criminal activities in Abeokuta, Wasimi and Ibafo, resulting in the dismantling of alleged theft and illegal arms networks.
Police identified the suspects as Afisu Awesu, Bala Aminu, Moruf Sodiq, popularly known as “Okiki”, Mumuni Amodu, alias “Stone”, Abayomi John, alias “Ibafo”, and Adeboye Ojesina.
Recovered during the operations were one pump-action rifle, one locally fabricated pistol, two live cartridges, one expended cartridge, five generators and nine Android phones believed to be stolen.
In one of the operations, the VCRU, acting on intelligence received on May 30, tracked and arrested Moruf Sodiq over his alleged involvement in a generator theft syndicate operating within Abeokuta and surrounding communities.
Investigators said the suspect subsequently led operatives to Mumuni Amodu, alleged to be a receiver of stolen goods. A search reportedly led to the recovery of four Elepaq generators, one Sumec Fireman generator and nine Android phones.
Police also arrested Abayomi John, a motorcyclist accused of providing transport and logistics support to members of the syndicate during operations.
In a separate operation on June 12, SWAT operatives arrested 58-year-old Adeboye Ojesina over alleged unlawful possession of firearms and claims that the weapons were used to intimidate residents in Wasimi and neighbouring communities.
According to police, a search conducted during the operation led to the recovery of a locally fabricated pistol, a pump-action rifle and ammunition.
The suspect reportedly denied ownership of the weapons but later claimed he found the pistol within the area and fired a round to test it, while alleging that the pump-action rifle had been handed over to him by an unidentified individual currently being tracked by investigators.
Meanwhile, operatives attached to Ibafo Division uncovered another suspected theft ring after responding to a complaint from a site at Igbeti Sote Village via Ibafo.
Police said Afisu Awesu was intercepted while allegedly attempting to steal a forklift engine component alongside an accomplice who escaped.
Further investigation allegedly linked the suspects to an earlier theft of forklift tyres from the same location, which detectives said had been sold to Bala Aminu of Kara, Ibafo. Bala was subsequently arrested as an alleged receiver of stolen property.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the VCRU, SWAT and Ibafo Division for what he described as swift, professional and intelligence-led operations.

He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to sustaining pressure on criminal elements and maintaining proactive policing across Ogun State, assuring residents of rapid response to security threats.
Police said investigations are ongoing and all suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigations.
