Police Arrest 49-Year-Old Armed Robbery Suspect, Recover Pump-Action Gun, 50 Cartridges in Anambra

Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested a 49-year-old man, Chima Ogumba, suspected of armed robbery and recovered a pump-action gun and 50 live cartridges from him in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
The suspect was arrested on the morning of Monday, August 17, 2026, by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, during an intelligence-led operation along Nkpor Road.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the operatives stormed the identified location and subjected the suspect to a search, leading to the recovery of the firearm and ammunition.
Ikenga said the suspect could not provide a satisfactory explanation for his possession of the weapon and ammunition.
“The suspect was unable to give a satisfactory and reasonable account of his possession of the firearm and ammunition,” the police spokesperson said.
The development comes as the Anambra Police Command intensifies intelligence-led operations and targeted interventions aimed at disrupting criminal activities across the state.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has directed that the suspect be subjected to thorough investigation to determine his possible involvement in armed robbery and other criminal activities.
The investigation will also seek to establish the source of the recovered firearm and ammunition and determine their intended use.
The Commissioner reiterated the Command’s commitment to proactive policing, intelligence-led operations and sustained tactical interventions against criminal networks operating in Anambra.
He said the Command would continue to deploy intelligence and targeted operations to identify, disrupt and dismantle criminal networks across the state.
The police said the investigation into the suspect was ongoing.
