Operatives of the Obalende Division of the Ogun State Police Command have foiled a planned kidnapping of a Chinese national and arrested two suspected members of a criminal conspiracy allegedly plotting to demand a ransom of ₦50 million.
The suspects, identified as Chinedu Onwuemena, 41, and Jimoh Ojo, 37, were arrested on June 9, 2026, following credible intelligence indicating an imminent kidnapping operation along the Ijebu-Ode/Odogbolu Expressway corridor.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, operatives attached to the division acted swiftly on intelligence received by the Divisional Police Officer and mobilised surveillance teams to the identified location.
The police spokesperson said the suspects were intercepted and arrested before the planned abduction could be carried out.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly conspired to abduct a Chinese national and demand a ransom of ₦50 million.
According to Babaseyi, investigations further showed that Onwuemena, who worked within the victim’s company as an interpreter and driver, allegedly used his position to facilitate the planned crime.
The police also disclosed that the arrested suspects acted alongside another accomplice who is currently on the run.
“Investigations further established that the arrested suspects did not act alone but in concert with another accomplice who is currently at large. Efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend the fleeing suspect, while discrete investigations continue to unravel the full extent of the criminal network behind the conspiracy,” Babaseyi stated.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
Commending the officers involved in the operation, the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, praised the professionalism and vigilance of operatives of the Obalende Division.
According to the CP, the timely intervention prevented what could have become a major kidnapping incident and underscored the importance of intelligence gathering and community partnership in crime prevention.
Ojajuni reassured residents and members of the business community that the command remains committed to intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention and the pursuit of criminal elements threatening public safety.
He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies by reporting suspicious activities promptly.
