The President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Mrs. Olufunmilola Disu, on Tuesday unveiled an expanded phase of the POWA CARES Initiative in Lagos, aimed at strengthening the welfare of police families through healthcare, education, and economic support.
Speaking at the official launch, Mrs. Disu said the initiative reflects a strategic shift toward structured and sustainable interventions, noting that the well-being of police families remains critical to effective policing and national security.

According to her, the Lagos phase builds on the success recorded in Abuja, where more than 1,000 beneficiaries received eye care services and medical support, underscoring both the scale of need and the capacity of POWA to deliver impactful programmes.
She explained that over the course of the two-day outreach in Lagos, more than 1,000 beneficiaries will benefit from free eye screening, treatment, corrective eyewear, dental services, and general medical consultations.
Beyond healthcare delivery, Mrs. Disu disclosed that the initiative also includes the award of nursing scholarships, financial grants to about 200 families, and the distribution of Cowry transport cards to ease daily mobility challenges.
She added that the programme is designed to foster inclusion and recognition, with selected beneficiaries expected to engage directly with top government and police leadership, including interactions with the Inspector General of Police and Lagos State Governor.

The POWA President further highlighted the association’s focus on youth development, noting that sensitisation sessions on drug abuse, cultism, and sexual and reproductive health have been incorporated to safeguard the future of young people within police communities.
Describing the initiative as a collaborative effort, she said it is being implemented in partnership with the Nigeria Police Force, government institutions, healthcare professionals, and development organisations to ensure long-term sustainability and nationwide scalability.
Mrs. Disu also acknowledged the support of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, as well as medical personnel and partners whose contributions she said have been instrumental to the programme’s success.
She reaffirmed POWA’s commitment to building a system that prioritises the welfare of police families, stressing that investing in families ultimately strengthens institutions and enhances national development.
Mrs. Disu thereafter declared the Lagos phase of the POWA CARES Initiative officially open.
