The Fertility Care Centre built by NEDC in UMTH Maiduguri which is among the very few Fertility Centres available in a Public Health Facility in the North East region completed in May 2026 has been comissiioned by Minister of State for Regional Development, Hon. UBA Ahmadu Maigari on Tuesday.
It will be recalled that, NEDC has stepped into the health intervention project to fill a critical gap in access to Reproductive Health Care Services in Borno state and north east region hence families previously that had to travel to Lagos, Abuja, or abroad at great personal cost to get the services.
A statement issued by the Manager, Communication Strategy , NEDC , Maiduguri and made available to newsmen in Tuesday said many could not afford the journey and simply gave up hope due nature of the facility which is a State-of-the-art fertility centre with full construction of all infrastructure by NEDC .

The Commission also equipped the center with world-class medical technology as well the commission also provided Solar-power energy to the center for uninterrupted service delivery.
The Commission further provided complete surgical and diagnostic equipment all estimated in billions including ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection machine), incubators, oxygen concentrators, Spermifuge and laboratory equipment etc easily at par with global standards.

In addition, the commission also provided full furniture and support infrastructure as well as
fully equipped and furnished delivery ensuite wards and offices.
Human Capacity Investment was not left out, as Pioneer health workers for the Fertility Centre (from UMTH) received intensive specialized training funded fully by the Commission to ensure skilled personnel to operate the equipment

Other benefits of the center to the region include it’s centre is readiness to serve patients without delay immediately after commissionin at affordable, high-quality assisted reproductive services now available locally.
No more expensive travel outside the region and it restored hope and dignity to families struggling with infertility.

Other NEDC Health Interventions at UMTH include provision of life-saving medical equipment and rehabilitation of critical health infrastructure provision of diagnostic equipment including MRI, CT scans, digital X-ray, mammography and dialysis machines.

NEDC’s Broader Health Sector Impact further include procurement of eight state-of-the-art MRI machines and other major medical equipement for the region, deployed N3 billion worth of ophthalmic equipment to Maiduguri Eye and Dental Hospitalas well as many other ongoing major health projects across the north east region.
