The Anambra State Police Command has deployed operatives and other security agencies to Onitsha Main Market and surrounding areas to enforce the state government’s directive on the closure of the market.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Ikenga said the closure was approved by Governor Chukwuma Soludo in the interest of public safety.
“The Onitsha Main Market has been re-closed in compliance with the directive of the Anambra State Government,” he said.
He explained that adequate security had been deployed to prevent breakdown of law and order.
“The Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, have deployed personnel in and around the market and other strategic locations,” Ikenga stated.
He said traders seen in a viral video gathering around the market were sensitised.
“They were addressed and encouraged to cooperate fully with government directives,” he added.
Ikenga assured residents that the situation remained calm.
“The situation in Onitsha and across the state is under control,” he said.
He noted that continuous monitoring was ongoing to forestall any breach of peace.
