The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory Command, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has ordered a comprehensive psychological and mental health assessment of all personnel, as part of measures to strengthen discipline, professionalism, and operational efficiency within the Command.
The directive followed an emergency meeting convened on Thursday in Abuja, where the CP met with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Tactical Units to address growing concerns over conduct and operational standards.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the CP stressed the need for officers to uphold the highest standards of professionalism in the discharge of their duties, warning that misconduct would no longer be tolerated under any guise.
Sanusi, who spoke extensively on the importance of discipline and public trust, cautioned officers against acts capable of bringing the image of the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute, while reiterating the need for strict adherence to extant human rights laws.
“He strongly warned against all forms of misconduct capable of bringing the image of the Nigeria Police Force and the FCT Command into disrepute, and reiterated the importance of strict adherence to extant human rights laws,” Adeh stated.
The CP further directed all senior officers to immediately return to their Areas of Responsibility to brief and sensitise their subordinates on the new directives, stressing that compliance would be closely monitored at the Command Headquarters.
He warned that any senior officer whose subordinate is found engaging in misconduct would be held vicariously liable, a move analysts say is aimed at enforcing leadership accountability within the policing system.
In what appears to be a strategic intervention to address behavioural and operational challenges, Sanusi directed the Command’s Medical Director, ACP (Dr.) Ifayase Olabanji Akinola, alongside the Police Counselling Unit, to commence a comprehensive mental and psychological evaluation of personnel.
The exercise, scheduled to begin on May 4, 2026, will initially focus on junior officers and is designed to enhance emotional stability, decision-making capacity, and overall performance both on and off duty.
The Command also urged residents of the Federal Capital Territory to remain law-abiding and to promptly report suspicious activities through designated emergency lines.
